In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded on January 6th, Kole Hebert, an 18-year-old from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, became a victim to a senseless shooting that has left his family, friends, and the entire community in shock. This article aims to shed light on who Kole is, the details surrounding the unfortunate incident, and the ongoing efforts to support him during his challenging journey to recovery.
Who is Kole Hebert?
Kole, the youngest child of Tracy and Kelly Hebert, recently celebrated his 18th birthday and was eagerly anticipating his graduation in May 2024. Known for his love of the outdoors, Kole enjoyed activities such as hunting, fishing, and baseball. His passion for the latter led him to commit to LSUE (Louisiana State University Eunice) for the fall of 2025, securing a full baseball scholarship. Kole is part of a close-knit family, being the youngest of four brothers and a sister: Kody, Chase, Chaz, Kade Hebert, and Katie Hebert Douet, respectively.
What happened to Kole Hebert?
On that fateful day, Kole became a victim of a shooting, sustaining life-threatening injuries that have altered the course of his life. The severity of the situation is evident in the fact that his cervical spinal cord was severed, resulting in paralysis from the neck down. This has left him dependent on a ventilator for breathing support. Additionally, Kole suffered a skull fracture and a serious injury to his oesophagus. The extent of the injuries has necessitated multiple surgeries, including repairing the gunshot wound, placing a voice box, installing hardware to support his cervical spine, addressing the skull fracture, and performing a tracheotomy to aid in breathing. Unfortunately, the bullet fragments are unable to be retrieved, adding to the complexity of his recovery.
The Road to Recovery:
Kole was swiftly transported to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, where his medical team is working tirelessly to provide the necessary care. However, the road to recovery is long and challenging. The next few days and weeks are critical as further tests and studies are conducted to identify any additional injuries that may not have surfaced initially. Kole will be in the hospital for at least the next two weeks, marking the start of his medical journey, which will be followed by several months in a rehabilitation facility.
In the face of such adversity, the community has rallied together to support Kole and his family. A GoFundMe campaign, organized by Megan Hebert and aptly named “Kole Hebert,” has been initiated to alleviate the financial burden on the family. The funds raised will contribute to covering medical expenses, bills, and travel costs, allowing Kole’s loved ones to be by his side during this challenging time. The campaign has already garnered significant support, with $26,610 USD raised out of a $50,000 target from 354 generous donations.
